About SRG

Systems Research Group is an independent research organization pursuing computing systems that remain understandable, adaptable, and open to investigation.

A place for systems research

SRG investigates whole computing environments: not only languages, runtimes, or interfaces in isolation, but the relationships among them. Its flagship project, System-128, asks how a personal dynamic medium might be designed with the benefit of five additional decades of research in software architecture, operating systems, collaboration, and human–computer interaction.

Research by construction

The group formulates principles, embodies them in small working systems, and tests them against demanding real-world cases. A principle earns its place when it helps produce a system that is more coherent, inspectable, composable, and useful.

What SRG is not

SRG is not affiliated with Xerox PARC, its former Learning Research Group, or the owners of the Smalltalk name. It acknowledges those projects as major intellectual influences while developing an independent system, identity, and body of work.
